Dr. B L Mungekar (b.1946), a noted educationist and development economist, obtained his M. A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of Mumbai. He has held the Centre of Advanced Study Chair in Economics in the University of Mumbai. He was appointed Member, the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices in 1999. He became Vice Chancellor of the University of Mumbai in 2000 and Member, Planning Commission in July, 2004. The President of India nominated him a Member of the Rajya Sabha in March, 2010. At present, he is also the President and Chairman of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla.

Dr. Mungekar’s contributions to economics and sociology have spanned several academic and professional journals and monographs. He has written and edited several books that include Buddhism and the Contemporary World, and Buddhism and the 21st Century. Dr. Mungekar, an influential social thinker and reformist, is an authority on Dr. Ambedkar’s philosophy and movement, and has been the Founder-President, Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Social and Economic Change. In recognition of his contributions to education and social service, he has been honored with several awards including an Outstanding Educationist Award, D. Lit. (Honaris Causa), and Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Award.
